- Today we welcome Statistician Greg Lemmon, NKU Alum, math/stat
graduate, and now at Eureka Ranch, in Ohio.
Several of you have expressed interest in statistics, and actuarial
science. I'm sure that you'll be especially interested in what Greg has
to say. We also have several applied mathematician folks in here, who
will also want to pay close attention to what Greg's doing: I can see
you pursuing similar opportunities one day.
-
Greg is the second of three talks by alums who have taken interesting
approaches to their careers following their undergraduate education.
Last week, Kari Stewart shared her experiences finding life in
mathematics education even after she discovered that she didn't care
for teaching as typically done in our schools.
Next week, Jen Quammen will share how she took a roundabout journey to
her ideal job.
- Your short essays about Kari's visit are due today. You can email
me those (but remember that I'd like your notes, too).
- Upcoming events:
- 2/15, Friday: Departmental lunch: 11:30am-1:30pm
- 2/16, Saturday: MathCounts needs student help!
Dr. McCartney says "We will be
scoring in one of the classrooms in this building,
usually on the second floor. The timing is between
about 9:00 and 11:00 or so."
- 2/23, Saturday: The Science and Engineering Fair of Northern
Kentucky is
coming soon, and they need help! The fair will be held
on Saturday, February 23, 2019 (roughly 8:00am-12:30pm
for judging activities) in the Student Union Building
at Northern Kentucky University.
- 2/27: NKU Career Expo: NKU is hosting a career expo on
Wednesday, February 27th from 2-5 pm on the first floor of the
Student Union. More than 135 employers will be seeking students
for co-ops, internships, and full-time jobs. More information
can be found here. A
directory of employers attending is here.
- 3/29-3/30, Friday, Saturday: KYMAA (Centre College; overnight, with expenses
"almost-all" paid -- you might have to buy a one lunch)
- 4/5-4/6, Friday, Saturday: Pop-Up Conference:
origami on Friday afternoon, and domino math
on Saturday morning. We'll need student help for this!
- 4/9-4/10: The Student Celebration of Research and
Creativity is also coming up April -- the 9th
and 10th. There are opportunities to visit
talks, or the big poster session.
- On-campus or off-campus talks (coming soon! One or two in April)
- There was some interest in undergraduate research expressed last
time, after hearing of Kari's experiences. You'll be hearing more about
that in two weeks, from two current undergraduates who will be coming
in to speak. They'll have more to say, but that's your teaser. We'll
also be having a pair of recent grads in March, who will speak to the
opportunities for research.
For the moment, however, you may want to investigate UR-STEM
opportunities, at this
website. Application deadline: Feb. 25.
One interesting story: I gave a talk in another professor's 194 class a
few years ago, and a student contacted me about conducting research. We
did, and an article we wrote together is going to press right now. So
please contact people who are doing things that interest you, and see
about working together.
