- Last Time: Start of Hypothesis Testing
- Hypothesis testing handout and vocabulary
- Type I error: rejecting a true null
- Type II error: failing to reject a false null
- Rejection region: the range of statistic values such that if the test statistic falls into that range we decide to reject the null hypothesis in favor of the alternative hypothesis.
- p-value: the probability of observing a test
statistic at least as extreme as the one computed given that the null
hypothesis is true.
- Example from the 212 website
- Note their use of the "n=30 rule" to decide whether normality is
appropriate or not.
- Note their use of the phrase "Accept Ha" - I prefer to
avoid the use of the word "accept" entirely! In general we simply reject
H0 in favor of Ha, or fail to reject
H0 in favor of Ha. It's hard to resist
using "accept", however, but try!
- Example:
- 11.46,
p. 340 (one-tailed)
- Today: More Hypothesis Testing
- But first: using Minitab to compute confidence intervals
- Collect homeworks for chapter 10, sections 1-3 (section 4 due next
time).
- Homework for Chapter 11 (combined) will be due on Tuesday, 3/16
- Hypothesis intuition sheet
- Sections 11.1-11.3
- Examples:
- #1, 6, p. 322
- 11.54,
p. 341 (two-tailed)
- Using a confidence interval to perform the same test
- If time permits,
11.52
- Next time: Begin t-distribution (Section
12.1, 12.2, w/ Minitab)
