Scenario: An epidemiologist (Susan) studies influenza among small towns in Michigan. She is interested in modeling the progression of a strain from town to town. She studies 18 isolated towns in the Upper Peninsula, and has complete data on the traffic patterns between them, as well as their records of influenza (from hospital and doctor records); using this information Susan wants to build a compartmental model of influenza spread between them.

Questions:

  1. How do the traffic patterns fit into the modeling process?
  2. Certainly folks travel outside the 18 towns: how might Susan handle this term?
  3. What assumptions might Susan make while constructing her model?
