- Operating System -
set of computer instructions (program) that controls the
allocation of computer hardware,
and provides the capability to communicate
with the computer.
- 32-bit operating system -
uses 32 bits for addressing (can address more than four
gigabytes of RAM) (XP 64-bit edition available
for scientific applications)
- Internet Explorer (IE)-
included in Windows , integrates desktop and the
Internet

Launching Microsoft

- Welcome Screen - shows
the names of every computer user on the computer
- To begin - click your user name display

password, and account type (Administrator, Limited, and Guest)
Windows Terminology
- Title bar
- contains window title
- Window Border
- double-line surrounding window

- taskbar -
at bottom of screen indicates open windows, contains the
Start button.
- Start button - provides an entry point to
begin using the features of Windows
The Mouse and Mouse
Pointer
- Primary Mouse Button - left mouse
button used in most mouse operations
- Secondary Mouse Button - right mouse
button - used to activate short-cut
menus
- wheel button
- functions depends on the software being used
- mouse pointer
(arrow) - moves across desktop in same direction that you
move the mouse
- shape of mouse pointer can change
depending on the operation
4 Basic Operations (Mouse)
- Pointing -
mouse pointer rests on item.
- Clicking -
pressing and releasing left mouse button. (Right-Click
- right mouse button - shortcut menu)
- Double-Clicking
- pressing and releasing left mouse button twice.
- Dragging -
holding down the left mouse button, moving an item to the
desired location, then releasing the left mouse button (Right-Drag
use right mouse button)

- folder -
is an object created to contain related documents,

- System menu - contains commands to
carry out the actions associated with the My Computer window.
- Standard Buttons toolbar - allow you to
perform often-used tasks more quickly than using menu bar
- Address bar - allows a launch of an
application, display of a document, open another window, and search for
information on the Internet

- Keyboard - press ALT key press the
underlined letter

3 Windows Buttons
- Minimize Button
- used to remove window from desktop,
appears as a non-indented button on taskbar.
- Maximize Button
- maximizes a window so it fills entire
screen.
( Restore Button
replaces Maximize button)
- Close Button
- closes the window and removes the window
button from taskbar
Dialog Boxes (Parts)
- dialog box
- window displays when Windows needs to supply
information, or needs user to enter information or select
among several options
- Options buttons
- mutually exclusive choices
- Command buttons
- executes an action
- Text box -
rectangular area in which Windows displays text or you
enter text
- Check Boxes -
options that you can turn on or off (X in a check box)
- Drop-down list box -
rectangular box containing highlighted text and down
arrow box on the right
- current selection
- default value of drop-down list box click arrow to see
other selections
Opening a Group Window
- Active Window -
window currently being used
(Only one application window and one group window can be
active at the same time.)
- Scroll Bar -
display at right and/or bottom edge of window whose
contents are not completely visible
- Scroll arrows -
arrows on scroll bar, enable you to see areas not visible
on screen
- Scroll box -
on scroll bar can be dragged
