Today:
- Announcements
- Your Asymptote homework is due.
- Your exams are returned.
- Most of you need to do better.
- If you wish, you may redo the exam, and I'll average the
two grades. Your redos will be due on Friday.
- Print off a copy of the
exam, and submit both your original exam (unmarked)
and the new exam. You only need to redo problems on
which you did not receive full credit.
- You may use any resources you wish to redo the exam -- the
calc lab, me, your friends, etc.
- Today we take a look at section 3.7 -- optimization
problems. The best way to explain is to do some examples, but the point
is that we're going to be looking for extrema of
functions. There are thus two things to do:
- Come up with the appropriate function, and then
- find extrema in the ordinary ways.
As usual, I recommend my "UPCE" (oopsie!) strategy for solving story
problems:
- Understand
- Plan
- Carry out
- Evaluate
(By the way: I say "my" strategy, but UPCE is basically the strategy of
George Polya, who wrote How to Solve It -- a very famous book, and
well worth the read. His "E" includes "Extend" -- can I solve more than
this given problem?)
