MLA Documentation Style

General Guide-lines:
  • double-space all pages
  • one inch margins (top, bottom, left, right),
  • indent 1st word of each paragraph 1/2 inch
  • page number at right margin 1/2 inch from top margin
  • precede page number with last name
  • title page - replaced by title block (name course information) on 1st page of paper 1 inch from top of page
  • Center Title - 2 lines below course information

MLA Documentation Style

  • Special Terms:
  • parenthetical citations - used instead of footnoting each source at the bottom or end of paper
    • MLA style - footnotes used only for explanatory notes
  • superscripts - (raised numbers) signal explanatory note exists
  • Explanatory notes (optional) elaborate on points discussed in body of paper
    • footnotes or endnotes can be used
    • double-space, indent 1/2 inch from left margin
  • Works Cited - lists works alphabetically by author’s last name
    • Separate page, center title 1 inch from top margin, double-space, begin at left margin, indent subsequent lines 1/2 inch from left margin

Headers and Footers

  • Header - text printed at top of each page (In Word put 1/2 inch from top of page)
  • Footer - text printed at bottom of each page 1/2 inch from the bottom of the page
Note: can include both text and graphics

Note: can also contain page number, date, and time by clicking the appropriate button on the Header and Footer toolbar

Going to a Specific Location in Document

  1. Double-click the page area of the status bar
  2. Press CTRL+G
  3. Click Edit, Go To on menu
  4. Click Select Browse Object button on vertical scroll bar

Using Thesaurus and Word Count

  • Thesaurus - book of synonyms (Tools menu)
  • Word count - gives number of words in document (Tools menu)
    • select group of text first to get number of words in group

Using the Research Task Pane
to Locate Information

*While holding down the ALT key, click the word for which you want a definition (e-commerce).  Release the ALT key
*If the Research task pane does not display the definition of the ALT+CLICKED word, click the Search for box arrow and then click All Reference Books
