About

The BFA Studio Arts Animation Track is a professional degree track that will prepare students for a career in the animation and media industry. Students will learn how to proficiently draw, effectively communicate stories and use state of the art digital tools to bring worlds and characters to life through animation. Students leave the program having honed their rendering skills, telling stories through their art and advanced techniques of animation with the core ability to manipulate space and time. Students will expand their artistic and stylistic practice while making connections with the histories, processes, concepts and contemporary issues in animation.

This innovative curricular collaboration across many areas will leverage NKU’s strategic goals by developing talent and innovation in the region and by expanding access and increasing student educational opportunities. The experiential Bachelor of Fine Arts Animation degree track is based in the Art & Design Program in the School of the Arts, with significant integration of curricular experiences in the 3D Digital Design and Visual Effects (VFX) area in the Department of Communication that is part of the College of Informatics. The curriculum follows a strong mix of sequential courses for the development of skills, techniques and ideas across the Arts and Informatics.

Students wishing to pursue a BFA Animation track should declare Visual Arts as their major and will start with a BA Studio Arts track.

Checklists & Procedures

BFA • Animation Track

The BFA degree is the nationally accepted professional degrees in art and design. These degrees carry a high level of expected growth and involvement on the student’s part. BFA students are not required to earn a minor outside of art and design, so spend more time studying in studios. Upon completion of 60 semester hours* in the university and 27 semester hours in art, majors who intend to apply for admission to the BFA degree option should register for ART 297 Portfolio Review. ART 297 Portfolio Review is the mechanism for faculty to review student portfolios so they may be admitted into the BFA program. All BFA majors are guaranteed a senior exhibition at NKU.

Minor • Art

The minor in art is meant to give students an introduction to understanding many of the disciplines in art and design. Students take a condensed version of the art foundations core and course electives from many of art disciplines of their choosing with the art minor.
