About

The new media art area is designed for students who want to explore areas such as electronic art, robotic art, installation or experimental video while encouraging the mixing of various media that have a time or technological component.

New media art utilizes the element of time with a strong intersection of technology and media that often involve interactivity and exploration of cultural concepts. The curriculum includes working at the frontiers of art, science, and technology, through hands-on learning techniques, with critical and creative thinking skills to understand the contemporary world and to create works of art that explore its workings.

Facilities

New Media Art area has a hybrid studio/computer lab, FA 305 which is equipped with 21 Mac Pros and HD cinema Displays an overhead video/computer projector and a 3D printer. A second digital lab serves as an open lab for advanced New Media Art students. The New Media Art area is at the cutting edge of technology and cinematography with studios to explore advanced production techniques, post production editing and interactive robotics.

New Media Art will prepare students for graduate school, for contemporary art practice as an independent artist and for careers in the creative technological fields such as film, videography, computing, or installation/exhibition design.

Checklists & Procedures

BFA • New Media Arts Track

The BFA degree is the nationally accepted professional degrees in art and design. These degrees carry a high level of expected growth and involvement on the student’s part. BFA students are not required to earn a minor outside of art and design, so spend more time studying in studios. Upon completion of 60 semester hours* in the university and 27 semester hours in art, majors who intend to apply for admission to the BFA degree option should register for ART 297 Portfolio Review. ART 297 Portfolio Review is the mechanism for faculty to review student portfolios so they may be admitted into the BFA program. All BFA majors are guaranteed a senior exhibition at NKU.

Minor • Art

The minor in art is meant to give students an introduction to understanding many of the disciplines in art and design. Students take a condensed version of the art foundations core and course electives from many of art disciplines of their choosing with the art minor.
