About

Painting requires an inventive, open-ended approach to image making, perception, and communication. Painting allows one to experiment with the possibilities of light, depth, color relationships and composition in service to the medium. Students of painting will learn how to use materials to the best of their ability in addition to insightfully addressing content in their work.

The painting area at NKU stresses the development of perceptual skills as well as inventive visual expression. Students, at levels appropriate to their abilities, are encouraged to take risks that expand the boundaries of the media, of composition and of conceptual strategies. Successful painting students leave the university with an increased capacity to make artwork that is both relevant and engaging.

Facilities

The painting studios are well ventilated. All students have access to easels, paint carts, drying racks and storage areas. Upper division students also have access to a spray booth and their own studio space.

A spacious general purpose Painting Studio space (FAC 413) as well as a room for Advanced 2-D Students (FAC 400) are located on the fourth floor of the Fine Arts Center. Students using the Painting Studio have access to easels, tables and cabinets as well as individual racks to store paintings. Advanced 2-D students have individual spaces and many students love the community that they build with their neighbors. Room 400 is secure and has a spray booth. Both rooms have multiple sinks, skylights, track lights and fluorescents. Both are also equipped with ventilation systems.

Checklists & Procedures

BFA • Painting Track

The BFA painting track is designed to immerse the student in studio practice. The serious student of painting who wishes to better their craft, plans to attend graduate school, or seeks an in-depth experience in the art of painting should pursue the BFA. The BFA degree is the nationally accepted professional degrees in art and design. These degrees carry a high level of expected growth and involvement on the student’s part. BFA students are not required to earn a minor outside of art and design, so spend more time studying in studios. Upon completion of 60 semester hours* in the university and 27 semester hours in art, majors who intend to apply for admission to the BFA degree option should register for ART 297 Portfolio Review. ART 297 Portfolio Review is the mechanism for faculty to review student portfolios so they may be admitted into the BFA program. All BFA majors are guaranteed a senior exhibition at NKU.

Minor • Art

The minor in art is meant to give students an introduction to understanding many of the disciplines in art and design. Students take a condensed version of the art foundations core and course electives from many of art disciplines of their choosing with the art minor.
